FAC/NEA Create and Activate Now (C.A.N.) Recover Grants and Stipends

Congratulations To Those Who Received a C.A.N. Recover Award!

Create and Activate Now Grants support artists and arts organizations who have been impacted by the Coronavirus. This funding opportunity is made possible through a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) American Rescue Plan (ARP) Grant to Local Arts Agencies (LAA) awarded to the Frederick Arts Council for sub-granting. This award is to support arts organizations and artists in Frederick County who have been impacted by the Coronavirus.

Subgrants will be awarded to

  • arts organizations as well as to
  • individual artists through stipends for arts projects.

Applications will be evaluated using the following criteria: artistic excellence, relevance/service to community, and capacity to implement.

Intended Outcome: Artistic activities are supported to strengthen our county’s—and the nation’s—cultural infrastructure. The subgrants will help restore the local community’s cultural infrastructure, benefitting arts workers, artists, and audiences.

Grants for Artists

Frederick Arts Council’s Create and Activate Now (C.A.N.) Recover Stipends and Grants

Through a National Endowment for the Arts’ American Rescue Plan Award, the Frederick Arts Council launched the C.A.N. Recover initiative, offering support to artists and arts organizations of Frederick .  These grants and stipends are intended to provide financial economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic to members of Frederick’s arts and cultural community.

Individual artist grants may be awarded to artists or arts organizations working in all disciplines, including Visual Arts, Dance, Music, Theater, Literature or Media/Multi-Media.

Individual artists can apply for grants for specific projects.

Application Dates

  • Application Opens: April 29
  • Application Deadline: May 30 by 11:59
  • Applicants may apply for the opportunity online.
  • Project Program Period: July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023

Grants for Organizations

Award for Nonprofit Arts Organizations

Grants will be awarded to 501(c)3 non-profit organizations up to $15000. Review criteria includes: artistic merit, service to community, organizational effectiveness. No matching funds are required.

Eligibility Requirements

All applicants must meet the grant eligibility requirements listed below:

  • Arts Nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3), U.S. organizations located in Frederick County
  • Arts Organizations who received a FY22 CAD Grant are invited to submit using an abridged application. See application links at the top of the page.

Important Notes

For-Profit entities and Fiscal Sponsors/Agents are not eligible subrecipients.

Organization Allowable Expenses

Funds are intended to support day-to-day business expenses/operating costs and is limited to any or all of the following costs:

  • Staff salaries and artist fees
  • Marketing and Promotion Costs
  • Costs associated with health and safety supplies for staff and/or visitors/audiences (e.g., personal protective equipment, cleaning supplies, hand sanitizer, etc.).
  • Rent & Utilities

Final Report

Grantees must submit a final report, including a list of expenditures by July 31, 2023
