FREDERICK, MD – The Frederick Arts Council (FAC) invites artists to submit proposals for a site-specific mural on the historic Dairy Maid Building in downtown Frederick, Maryland.
The site of the mural will be at the Dairy Maid Building located on the corrugated steel rear wall of the 259 East Seventh Street building. Dimensions will be 17 feet wide by 13 feet tall to be visible to pedestrians and traffic in the area.
The FAC invites artists and artist teams within an 80-mile radius to propose designs for a bold, thoughtful mural that responds to Frederick’s character–its layered history, creative energy, agricultural roots, and forward-looking spirit.
Frederick County has long been shaped by farming, food production, and rural landscapes, while the City of Frederick has emerged as a center for arts, small businesses, and cultural innovation. The Dairy Maid Building—once tied to everyday systems of nourishment and work—offers a powerful site for reflecting on how the past continues to inform the present and propels us into the future.
Artists are encouraged to develop their own themes and vision. Proposals may be literal or abstract, historical or contemporary, symbolic or narrative. Artists should consider how imagery, pattern, and color interact with the corrugated steel surface, using its texture to enhance depth, rhythm, and movement. Prior mural or large-scale public art experience preferred.
Artists may propose materials of their choosing. This opportunity is open to artists and artist teams. Proposals will be reviewed based on: Artistic excellence and originality, appropriateness for the site and material, feasibility and durability, demonstrated ability to complete the project on time.
