Participants Sought for Art in the Park

July 26, 2011

Participants are being sought for an annual event that fuses sports and the arts together. During the 5th annual Art in the Park night, presented by the Frederick Arts Council in partnership with the Frederick Keys, visual and performing artists have an opportunity to participate in numerous activities. In addition to partaking in America’s favorite past-time, activities throughout Harry Grove Stadium showcase Frederick’s vibrant and thriving arts community. The event is scheduled for Friday, August 26th.

For the event, the Frederick Arts Council is seeking individuals as well as groups interested in performing at various times before, during, and after the game. Performances can involve music, theater, dance, or other medium.

In addition, the organization is seeking visual artists interested in painting plein air style during the game, capturing the games, players, crowd, and stadium on canvas. Two years ago, plein air painting took place on a small scale and was received very well. In addition to showcasing his or her individual talent, the artist has an opportunity to exhibit and sell their work at the Cultural Arts Center after the event. Complimentary tickets to the game will be provided to participating artists and one additional guest.

Furthermore, people who love to knit, crochet, cross-stitch, embroider and needlepoint are encouraged that evening to participate in the Stitch N’ Pitch activities. For the past four years, The National NeedleArts Association (TNNA) has partnered with Major League and Minor League Baseball on this event which encourages thousands of “Stitch N’ Pitch fans” every year to bring their yarn, knitting needles, patterns, needlepoint and needlearts projects to work on during the game. Stitching in public has become a hot trend and seeing groups of people working on needlearts projects in coffee shops, on the bus or subway and other public places is becoming a regular sighting. This is the second straight year that Stitch N’ Pitch has been part of the Frederick Arts Council’s Art in the Park event.

Throughout the evening, other arts-based activities will be taking place. The baseball players will be wearing a uniquely-designed jersey by local artist Samantha Baker and there will be organizational exhibits, interactive art activities, fireworks, and more. Individuals and groups interested in participating in the event should contact the Frederick Arts Council at 301-662-4190 as space is limited.
