Vote to Help Arts Council Receive Green Roof

December 5, 2010

The Frederick Arts Council is one of thirty-six nonprofit organizations in the Mid-Atlantic region that is vying for a green roof giveaway. Local residents can help with the process, by visiting the competition website and voting for the Frederick Arts Council’s video submission. Individuals are allowed one vote per day through December 17th and can do so by visiting www.greenroofgiveaway.com/nominees.

The video submitted by the Frederick Arts Council was created specifically for the competition and takes a fun and lighthearted musical approach. Clark Kline from Fool Martyr Productions shot the film, which stars local actor DC Cathro. The song was written and performed by Andrew Baughman, artistic director for Landless Theatre Company.

If successful with the competition, the Cultural Arts Center could receive a free vegetated or solar integrated roof. There are many reasons these roofs are considered sustainable from storm water management and energy efficiency to conserving resources. This will significantly help the Cultural Arts Center, a 14,000 square foot community art center located in historic downtown Frederick. The facility is one of the busiest arts spaces in Frederick County. The Cultural Arts Center was utilized by over thirty groups last year and contributes to the economic vitality of the downtown business district. The green roof’s estimated value is approximately $30,000. A second organization will receive a $5,000 cash prize.

The green roof giveaway is being sponsored by Cole Roofing, a company based in Baltimore that has been experts in roofing for four generations and over ninety years. From restorations to re-roofs to repairs, the company offer many sustainable solutions when it comes to roofing such as green vegetated roofs and solar integrated roofs.

This competition is Cole Roofing’s way of giving back to non-profits that have already given our communities so much. The organization that wins the voting will automatically win $5,000. At the conclusion of the voting period a jury at Cole Roofing will select the winner of the green roof and announce it on December 24th.

According to the website, Cole Roofing believes the push to “go green” isn’t just a trend. “It’s here to stay. And we’re committed to providing our customers with sustainable roofing solutions that help our environment one roof at a time. Non-profit organizations are the backbone of our country, committed to worthy causes, their employees working long hours, often doing without the latest and greatest technologies so funding can be directed towards the greater good.”
