Stand Up Comedy Show Scheduled

January 8, 2011

Doug Powell, a ten year veteran of the performing arts got his start in the underground comedy scenes of Washington DC and Baltimore. Since then he has released several albums ranging from stand-up and sketch to music and ringtones, some of which have been featured on Sirius Satellite Radio, Slacker Radio, and stations around the DC/Baltimore area. Maybe, that means he’s cool or something.

On Saturday, December 8th, Powell will host a live comedy show entitled “I am you an hour from now” at the Cultural Arts Center, located in downtown Frederick. The show starts at 9:00 p.m. with a reception starting a 8:00 p.m.

“I Am You An Hour From Now” is an attempt to complete some stories and thoughts Powell has been working on for the past two years. “It’s my chance to rid my mind of these ideas and make way for more stuff,” he said. “The stories are true but distorted for your pleasure and the ideas within the stories give me a chance to stand on a really big soap box. It should take about one hour or so… and it should be a very funny show. It really depends on the audience though so please only come if you’re awesome at being an audience.”

The show will be recorded so that maybe someday, years from now, someone will listen to it and think of how much Powell sounds like someone they know. “I’ll probably hand the album out as a Christmas gift too so be ready,” he said.

Originally from a small town in Illinois, Powell is now a native of Frederick where he runs a small organic farm for Cafe Nola, an independent restaurant downtown. The comedian wants to be the President when he grows up, but not of the United States.

“This show is not for the faint of hearts. If you’re afraid of magic or dragons or comedy you shouldn’t come but if you like those things… especially the comedy, you should,” Powell said. There will be plenty of that.

Music will be provided during the reception by Goodloe Byron. Mike Way will serve as the opener for the show. The event is being presented by Flying Dog, Maryland’s largest brewery. Flying Dog is closely allied with Gonzo co-conspirators world-renowned artists and Gonzo co-conspirator Ralph Steadman. A cash bar will be available throughout the event. Tickets are $10 and limited seating is available.

The Cultural Arts Center is located in downtown Frederick at 15 W. Patrick Street. The facility is managed by the Frederick Arts Council, whose mission is to be the primary catalyst and advocate for arts opportunities in Frederick County.
