Rebecca Pearl booksigning at Frederick Artist Market

Artist Rebecca Pearl has been a fan of horses for quite some time, and the animal can often be seen in many of her paintings.  Now, the well-known Maryland artist has written and illustrated a children’s book that was inspired by her horse Gilbert.  Pearl will be at the Cultural Arts Center on Saturday, October 1st from 5:00-9:00 p.m. to sign copies of “Gilbert and the Great Horse Spirit.”  The book retails for $12.95 and books will be available for purchase at the event.

 

The book is a tender story about a young thoroughbred colt whose Mother tells him early on that life can become dark and difficult, but to always rely on “the great horse spirit”, and to be courageous, patient, and kind.  Throughout Gilbert’s life, he is sold to different owners and retrained to do many things. The book reveals some of the horse’s thoughts and feelings of happiness, disappointment and anticipation, through these he never forgets his Mother’s words of love and hope.           

 

Pearl adopted Gilbert, a retired U.S. Park Police horse, in 2006 after completing a commissioned work of art of a mounted policeman.  “This event changed my life in body, mind, and soul,” Pearl said.  She credits Gilbert for her efforts in getting fit and healthier, as she rides about three times per week and takes him to a dressage riding lesson once a week.  “Having the blessing of Gilbert in my life has taught me many things,” she said.

 

Pearl is an accomplished painter and instructor.  She also owns the Rebecca Pearl Gallery, located in historic Emmitsburg.  She resides near the Catoctin Mountains with her husband, two German Shepherds, three cats, and two horses.

 

Pearl’s booksigning will coincide with the Frederick Artist Market.  From 5:00-9:00 p.m., approximately twenty-five artists will be exhibiting and selling their work at the Cultural Arts Center as well.  This indoor art and craft event is free and open to public.  All items at the Frederick Artist Market are produced by the individual artist.  Examples of items available include, but are not limited to, paintings, pottery, photography, jewelry, wood-carved utensils, hand woven scarves, and other art pieces. 

 

The Frederick Artist Market has been a great addition to Frederick’s Arts and Entertainment District.  Artists participating in the event may qualify for various tax advantages, as one of the requirements for such benefits is the artwork must be created and sold within the geographic boundaries.  Downtown Frederick is one of nineteen arts and entertainment districts designated by the State of Maryland. 

 

The Frederick Artist Market is a program of the Frederick Arts Council and occurs several times throughout the year.  The Cultural Arts Center is located at 15 North Market Street in downtown Frederick.  For more information about the event, call 301-662-4190.
