2013 Gallery Exhibit Opportunities

One way the Frederick Arts Council supports visual artists is by providing a exhibit space in the Market Street Gallery of the Cultural Arts Center of Frederick County. The gallery will feature emerging and established artists as well as amateur and student artists on occasion. Most exhibits are solo or small group shows; however group shows are also organized during specified months and organized by unique themes.

DURATION OF ART EXHIBITS AND PUBLIC VIEWING:

Duration of art exhibits are on average 27 days in length, but vary depending on the opening and closing dates. Gallery opening receptions are typically held the first Saturday of the month from 5 – 9pm to coincide with Downtown Frederick’s First Saturday activities. Installation of exhibits takes place the Wednesday before the first Saturday of the month and removal of the exhibit takes place the Tuesday before the following first Saturday. The normal hours of operation for the gallery are Thursdays 10am – 6pm, Fridays and Saturdays 10am – 9pm, and Sundays 12 – 5pm. However, the CAC is frequented regularly on evenings and weekends for performances, rehearsals, and other special events, allowing additional exposure for the artwork. Additional viewing times can be set up by special appointment and artists are welcome to arrange additional gallery coverage.

COMPENSATION AND LIABILITY:

Artwork should be advertised for sale, as part of the gallery’s intent is to support artists deriving income from their work. All artwork sales will be handled by the Frederick Arts Council during the designated exhibit dates. The FAC will assume a 30% commission fee (25% fee for members) of gross sales, including sales resulting from the show. The FAC will not be liable for any damage, theft, or loss of any piece of artwork and artists are encouraged to carry liability insurance.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

• Preference is given to artists living and/or working in Frederick County. Additional consideration will be given to affiliate members of the Frederick Arts Council and to emerging artists. Although not required, the FAC also asks each participating artist to donate a piece of artwork for the permanent gallery or FAC fundraising event.

• All artwork must be appropriate for viewing by the general public, and must be free of any political, religious, or sexual messages and must also not have content that is disparaging of third parties. The FAC reserves the right to deny any submission to be put on public display for any reason.

• The Frederick Arts Council can only accept artwork that is displayed on a wall. Gallery artists share the space with the Potters’ Guild of Frederick whose work is displayed in the center of the gallery.

• The artist is responsible for the installation and removal of the exhibit.

• The artist is responsible for all signage for the exhibit, including posters, labels, price sheets, and postcards.

• The Frederick Arts Council will assist with publicizing the exhibit by submitting a press release to local and regional media. Additionally, the FAC will list the exhibit on the calendar of events on the FAC website and other community calendars. Additional advertising is the responsibility of the artist.

• The FAC reserves the right to refuse any artwork/exhibit or installation methods that are deemed unacceptable and have an adverse affect on the facility or the organization.
