Artists Sought for Jersey Design Contest

In 2007, the “rubber duck-key” themed jersey designed by Bridget Von Briel was indeed lucky as some say it helped the Frederick Keys baseball team win the game that night. Since then, Frederick artist Bev Reidinger inspired a patriotic evening with her “Star Spangled Banner” jersey and Ron Roos followed the theme up last year with his “fireworks” jersey.

Now, local residents have their own opportunity to design a jersey for the players to wear. As part of the fifth annual Art in the Park night at Harry Grove Stadium, members of the Frederick Keys will wear a uniquely-designed jersey.

Art in the Park, organized by the Frederick Arts Council, is an annual event that fuses sports and the arts together. The 2011 event is scheduled for Friday, August 26. In addition to the players touting the artist-designed jerseys, several activities are planned to promote and celebrate the visual and performing arts throughout the evening, concluding with a fireworks show.

Individuals interested in submitting jersey designs should contact the Frederick Arts Council for an application form. The selected design will be judged on creativity, ability for reproduction, and connectivity to the theme of the Keys or the arts. The deadline for submission is June 10th.

After the game, the jerseys will be autographed by the players and auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the arts council. The selected artist will receive have a choice to receive a portion of the proceeds or a commemorative jersey, as well as four complimentary tickets to the game that evening.

“The Frederick Keys are thrilled to be partnering with the Frederick Arts Council once again in this collaborative effort,” Keys Director of Marketing Adam Pohl said. “The growth of the arts is critical and we are looking forward to this event bringing our communities together once again this August!

Artists and arts organizations interested in participating in the event in other ways should contact the arts council. Activities from past years have included the annual Stitch-n-Pitch event, musical and dance performances, an author appearance, interactive art activities, and a plein air artist demonstration. Art in the Park is a collaborative effort between the Frederick Keys and the Frederick Arts Council and has been a model for other communities across the country. In October 2009, Frederick Arts Council Executive Director Shuan Butcher presented a workshop at the National Arts Marketing Project conference in Providence, Rhode Island on the project and communities from Maryland to Kansas have been interested in adopting similar initiatives. “The Frederick Keys is a great asset to our community and we this event is one of the highlights of the year for us because it is truly unique,” Butcher said.
