Art of Fashion Gallery Exhibit

In honor of Frederick’s own Claire McCardell and Frederick Fashion Week, the Frederick Arts Council will host a gallery exhibit entitled “The Art of Fashion.”  Fashion-themed artwork will be on display at the Cultural Arts Center, located in downtown Frederick, throughout the month of September.  The opening reception will be held on Saturday, September 3rd from 5:00-9:00 p.m.  The exhibit and reception are both free and open to the public. Some of the work will be available for purchase throughout the show.  The last day of the exhibit is scheduled for September 25th.  

 

A total of nine artists will be displaying work during this exhibit, including Shannon Beatty, Susan Centineo, Erick Gibson, Amanda Golden, Alex Huseman, Tereva King-Adams, Bill Millios, Misti Morningstar and Dan Scenna.

 

Beatty operates 2eyes photography.  Natural affinities for life science, wearable art, and the vagaries of light and biological vision attract her to cameras and sewing machines. For the most part self-taught as a seamstress and photographer, Beatty started out making images of plants and animals, then she transitioned to exploration of window-captive mannequins during walkabouts in Manhattan. Beatty is a longtime Frederick resident and shoots primarily with old-school film cameras, exploiting the scope and sensitivity of chemical emulsions to capture her experiences of light, shadow, and reflection.

 

Centineo moved to Frederick in 1993 and worked in the Real Estate field and as a freelance writer. In 2005 she was inspired by fashion photographer Roy Cox while at a wedding shower given by his wife. Shortly after writing an interview piece on him, she plunged into photography full force.  The move panned out as Centineo now operates a large Creative Studio in the heart of downtown Frederick with a staff of photographers, stylists, and support personnel. “We do modeling portfolios and conduct our own BOOT CAMP Models Program for aspiring models. We do highly affordable retail ad campaigns for boutiques and salons, and for nearly three years now we have been conducting fashion training workshops and high-end shoots regularly in New York City and Baltimore,” she said.

 

Gibson is a realist, a documentarian, and a portraitist. He is comfortable proposing a photograph as truth, but also invested in bringing out the non-reality and the imaginary in a photograph.  Gibson has been behind the camera for over a decade. He holds a B.A. degree in Photography from the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Since 2006 Gibson has been a freelance photographer working nationally and traveling worldwide. Providing excellent location and studio photography, his images encompass many genres, including sports, portrait, fashion, editorial, photojournalism, and fine art.  He has worked with a diverse range of clients, ranging from newspapers and magazines to small businesses, Fortune 500 companies, and commercial advertising agencies.

 

“I can enjoy a photograph in its simplest form, as a basic document and memory. I welcome its presentation of beautifully ugly truth, and I equally welcome the attractive lie.  Photography is a medium that suits me because it can use the real world as a base reference. Then it becomes a separate object that takes on its own life, while threatening to be reality,” Gibson said.

 

Golden is an up-and-coming photographer based out of Kensington, Maryland.  A student at the Washington School of Photography, she has had a passion for photography since she was young, starting out in the darkroom developing black and white film before moving into the digital world.  Golden’s main focus is on people, taking a photojournalistic approach to capturing her clients and their natural, unscripted interactions.  She is currently working to establish her own child and family photography business.

 

For Alex Huseman, it all started when she had to take a mandatory Fine Art credit in the 10th grade.  She decided Photography would be the easiest class in the world.  Although she didn’t realize it was a darkroom photography class, she fell in love after her first day in the darkroom.  Huseman continued her photography career until she graduated high school. In her senior year, she completed a concentration on Abstracting Fashion.  Huseman was planning on attending either Rochester Institute of Technology or NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, but is currently at FCC for the next two years.  “I’m going to keep working on my photography and one day you will see my pictures on the pages of VOGUE,” she said.

 

King-Adams, owner of Adams Fashion Design Studio, has been designing for more than twenty-five years.  She received her degree in Fashion Design in 1984 and since has received numerous awards and certificates, such as alumni of the year awards, and a few from various mayors in Baltimore City.  King-Adams has been featured in industry sewing magazines, being the founder and educator of Edmonson-Westview Rec and Park Council (EDRECO) Fashion Design/Sewing Center.  She has designed for customers in Nigeria and hair products Paul Mitchell Design Team. Her hanging wall art work has oodles and oodles of hand painted beads from around the world, each individually placed. Her Wearable Art Skirts design are individually designed for the  person who wants to be set apart from the crowd as no two skirts are alike.  “My inspiration comes from being a wife, mother of 5, and traveling, needless to say we are always doing something fun and creative,” she said.

 

Millios has been a freelance photographer, doing both stills and motion since 2002.  He loves to shoot people … with a camera; people getting married, people having babies, happy people, sad people, people achieving success, among others.

 

Morningstar is the brainchild behind the photojournalistic vision of Misti Morningstar Photography. Morningstar and her team photograph all types of subject matter, but primarily they document beautiful souls living one of the best days of their lifetime throwing a big party for their closest friends and family. Their off-the-cuff style goes along perfectly with the unique spots chosen by their clients and their spirits are driven even higher by the clients who trust in their creative vision. Morningstar has 20 years of experience and is a two-time winner of Maryland’s Top MBE businesses. She has been nationally and internationally awarded for her creative expertise.

 

Scenna is an award winning photographer and educator, based out of Frederick, Maryland.    His works include portraiture, photo- illustration, macro/close up photography, sports, still life studies and figure fine art.  He teaches photography classes in the Continuing Education Program at Frederick Community College.  He also conducts workshops in a variety of photography subjects.    He is the organizer and host of a Regional Figure Fine Art Photography Gathering held twice a year in central Maryland that draws participants from as far away as Philadelphia and Richmond.

 

In addition to the gallery exhibit, Scenna will be displaying additional photographic images in the Cultural Arts Center Event Hall, along with Lisa Bolton and Joe Williams.  All of their images were taken as part of a photo shoot over the summer.  These images will become part of the 2011 Frederick Fashion Week décor, where the runway shows and other activities will take place from September 13-17th.

 

Bolton is an observer and a naturally curious person. Having an interest in beauty and form, she was immediately inspired to join fellow photographers and shoot photos for the 2011 Frederick Fashion Week.  “One of my main photography goals is to capture images of interesting and beautiful things from an unusual perspective and share them with others. And, if I can inspire others to do the same, then it’s even more satisfying, “she said.  Currently vice president of the Frederick Camera Clique, Bolton’s work has been published in The Washington Post and in the Frederick-News Post, and on display at the Mary Condon Hodgson Art Gallery and the COMSTAR Credit Union headquarters in downtown.  Her honors and awards have included first place in the 2009 Frederick Camera Clique juried summer competition and two awards in the 2010 Great Frederick Fair. The new FMH Women’s Center at Crestwood selected one of Bolton’s photos to hang in the inaugural “Celebration’s” show 2010-2011 at the Crestwood Gallery.

 

Williams is an Associate Artist with the Maryland Ensemble Theatre, collaborating with the MET to document and promote their productions.  He enjoys portraiture, figure, and macro photography, and has found inspiration in the work of George Hurrell, Edward Weston, Lee Miller, and many others, including the large number of talented artists in the Frederick area. Williams is also an active member of the Frederick Camera Clique but the 2011 Fashion Week is his first experience with fashion photography.

 

In addition, approximately twenty sketches from the Claire McCardell fashion sketch collection will be on display at the Cultural Arts Center, courtesy of Kellen Design Archives at Parsons The New School for Design in New York, NY.  Frederick resident Nancy Whitmore has also loaned pieces of Claire McCardell merchandise for the duration of the exhibit.  And finally, photographs of McCardell and her clothing as well as replica cover of Look magazine featuring the former Fredericktonian will be on display thanks to the Historical Society of Frederick County.

 

The gallery, which is open Thursday through Sunday, is located at 15 North Market Street.
