Art in the Park Details Announced

August 15, 2011

Sports and the arts will come together once again for one night in August.  The fifth annual Art in the Park event will be held on Friday, August 26th at Harry Grove Stadium.  In addition to being able to enjoy a Frederick Keys baseball game, attendees will also be able to experience many art-related activities.

That night, the baseball players will also be wearing one-of-a-kind jerseys designed by local artist Samantha Baker, with a “Bumble Keys” theme.  After the game, the players will autograph the shirts and they will be auctioned off to the highest bidder with the proceeds benefiting the Frederick Arts Council.

Several unique activities are being planned for this year’s event.  Five plein air artists will be on hand painting scenes from the game, including Walt Bartman, Rebecca Jackson, Peter Plant, Edna Searles, and Anne Gibson Snyder.  Their work may be on display and available for purchase upon completion.

Local artist Vince Coates will be leading an interactive art activity that will allow kids and other interested parties a chance to throw paint balls at a canvas, creating unique pieces of artwork that will be displayed and available for purchase.  There will also be performances by Shining Stars School of Performing Arts and local musicians as well.

Also incorporated into the event for the second straight year is the annual Stitch “N Pitch activities that night, encouraging local knitters, embroiders, and others to engage in stitching activities while enjoying the game.  Stitch N’ Pitch is an initiative of The National NeedleArts Association (TNNA), who has partnered with Major League and Minor League Baseball which encourages thousands of “Stitch N’ Pitch fans” every year to bring their yarn, knitting needles, patterns, needlepoint and needlearts projects to work on during the game.

A new partnership this year with the United Way of Frederick County encourages game attendees to bring art supplies and other school products for their Stuff the Bus campaign, which concludes that evening.  Also on hand will be various local arts organizations, who will be displaying their literature and available for questions.  Pre-game activities begin at 6:00 p.m., including the first pitch being thrown by Miss Maryland Carlie Colella.  Ally Soule, Maryland’s Outstanding Teen, will also be attending the event.  The night will conclude with a fireworks show.

Art in the Park is an annual event organized by the Frederick Arts Council in partnership with the Frederick Keys.  A limited number of discounted tickets to the game are available at the Cultural Arts Center for just $3.00 per person.  For more information, call 301-662-4190.
